Wire MC
Wire MC is a descendant of the Gumbayngirri indigenous people. The Gumbayngirri are from Bowraville on the mid-north coast of NSW. He grew up on a Christian mission. In Bowraville he started a hip-hop crew called Barrung Buljurr Girrawa, which means Bowra Rhythm Mob. He also makes music with his two sons. They call themselves the Bowra Boy Clan.
For the last seven years Wire has been living in Sydney. More correctly, he has been a visitor on Gadigal land. Gadigal is the name of the indigenous people on whose land Sydney is built.
You won’t find Wire MC’s music in the CD stores. You won’t hear his music on the radio except on Koori Radio (FM 93.7 in Sydney). His idea of hip-hop is about community. As he says: “MC for me means My Cousin”. His music is very political, but he is always looking for positive things it can do for himself and his people. This is why he calls hip-hop the “modern-day corroboree”.
